Production capacity at Kumho Tire USA Inc.'s consumer tire manufacturing plant in Macon, Ga., will increase by an additional 500,000 units per year as part of an expansion initiative that is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022.
Currently, Kumho's Macon plant can produce 11,000 passenger tires at capacity, according to MTD's 2021 Facts Issue.
Parent company Kumho Tire also is investing $305 million to expand its tire manufacturing plant in Vietnam.
"Upon completion of the expansion in Vietnam, the company forecasts to produce at least 9.3 million tires per year," according to Kumho officials. "The project for expansion will gradually be funded beginning from the third quarter of 2021 through the first quarter of 2023, in which a new section of the building will be added to the vacant lot space currently within the overall facility compound."
Kumho has eight plants spread across Vietnam, the U.S., China and its native South Korea.
The Macon plant is Kumho's only production facility in the U.S. It opened in 2015.
"As a company, we are headed in a very positive direction and part of our strategy is to increase our production capacity ahead of the growing demand in order to ensure product availability for our customers and support the continued growth of partnerships in the North American market," says Il Taik Jung, Kumho Tire's president and CEO.
