A new piece of legislation would provide tax credits to commercial trucking fleets that buy medium truck tire retreads.
The bipartisan legislation, the Retreaded Truck Tire Jobs, Supply Chain Security and Sustainability Act of 2024, was introduced to Congress on May 28.
It also would require federal agencies to consider the use of retreaded truck tires.
“The Tire Industry Association (TIA) fully supports H.R. 8578,” says Roy Littlefield IV, vice president of government affairs for the Tire Industry Association.
“We are enthusiastic about this bill and are collaborating with the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) to build support and spread awareness.
“Given the election year constraints, only essential legislation is progressing at this time. Consequently, we see this bill as an opportunity to lay the groundwork for support in the next Congress if we are unable to find a vehicle to advance the legislation by the end of the year.”
In 2022, MTD covered a similar bill that ultimately did not come up for vote.
