The CEO of McCarthy Tire Service Co., the sixth largest commercial tire dealer in the U.S., died Jan. 27. John D. "Jack" McCarthy was 79.
McCarthy ran the company alongside his son, John D. McCarthy Jr., who serves as president.
McCarthy Tire is a multi-generational, family-owned company based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. It was founded in 1926 by the late Joseph J. McCarthy. The company operates seven Bandag retread plants and one OTR retread plant. The company is No. 22 on the MTD 100 with 45 retail, commercial-only and combined commercial-retail locations.
McCarthy is being remembered for more than his business success. He was chairman of the board of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for 26 years and the Wilkes-Barre Housing Authority for 12 years, and volunteered for many other community causes. His philanthropic causes were varied, and included King's College, which dedicated the McCarthy Stadium in his name, and Bishop Hoban/Holy Redeemer High School, which dedicated its auditorium to him. He was also supportive of Misericordia University, the Catholic Youth Center and the American Heart Association.
He was named Citizen of the Year by the Wilkes-Barre Lions Club, Man of the Year by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and Small Businessman of the Year by the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce. He was the recipient of the Crystal Rose Award from Little Flower Manor. Numerous other organizations have also honored him for his contributions to the community
A celebration of Jack's life will begin Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 130 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
