The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall of 541,632 tires from Prinx Chengshan Tire North America Inc. The voluntary recall initiated by the company affects certain all-weather rugged terrain or mud-terrain tires sold under both the Fortune and Prinx brands.
The recall encompasses these tire lines: Fortune Tormenta R/T FSR309 and Tormenta M/T FSR310, and the Prinx HiCountry R/T HR1 and HiCountry M/T HM1.
According to the recall notice, the affected tires were produced between Aug. 24, 2020, and Dec. 7, 2024. The Tire Identification Number (TIN) includes: Plant ID: 04N, Size code: NR, Optional Code: NR, Begin M Code: 31, and End M Code: 48.
The safety recall report says the tires are marked with the “alpine symbol,” (the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol), but don’t meet the traction requirements for that symbol. “If placed into service, the subject tires may not provide the expected traction performance in severe snow weather conditions and could potentially increase the risk of a crash.”
Here’s how NHTSA described the cause of the recall:
“Tires were tested to the European standard ECE R-117 which allows the use of the alpine symbol on the tire sidewall. It was subsequently determined that the ECE R-117 test did not correlate with the ASTM F1805 test required in North America. ASTM testing was conducted on sample sizes which returned a failing test result.”
Prinx is still developing a remedy program for the recalled tires, “but intends to provide interim dealer and owner notification letters no later than Feb. 1, 2025.”
