Former Atlanta Hawk Spud Webb provided an unexpected assist when he recently served as a celebrity driver for Tire Discounters Inc.'s Skip the Shop vehicle pick-up and delivery program.
Webb, the National Basketball Association's Slam Dunk Contest winner in 1986, spent the morning of April 14 picking up Tire Discounters' customers' cars in the Chamblee, Ga., area.
He rode with Brandon Grubbs, senior director of business development, for the Cincinnati, Ohio-based dealership, which is continuing its push into the Atlanta, Ga., metropolitan market. (Tire Discounters plans to open 25 stores across Georgia - with special focus on the Atlanta market - this year.)
Grubbs says customer reactions "were priceless. Some customers were speechless. One woman wanted Spud to dunk in her driveway."
Anna Wood, Tire Discounters' managing director, says the dealership chose Webb "because he is beloved in Atlanta. Spud Webb also is the champion of the underdog and an inspirational example of how you can do anything if you put your mind to it."
Wood adds that Webb's involvement helps reinforce Tire Discounters' entry into the Atlanta market, where the dealership also plans to open a 72,000-square-foot distribution center and training facility, which will be operational this fall.
"We're a fun-loving company that values humor, hard work and positivity," says Tire Discounters President and CEO Jamie Ward. "We also like to do things a little differently, so we decided to bring back a legend - someone who has made a lasting impression on Atlanta: Spud Webb."
