Steve Shannon Tire Co. Inc. is one of the largest tire dealerships in the U.S. And it keeps getting larger.
On Dec. 30, 2015, the Bloomsburg, Pa.-based retail chain purchased Bill Diehl Tire, a family-owned store located in Stroudsburg, Pa. Opened in 1932, the store was being run by Diehl's grandson, Andrew Diehl. It is the 16th store in the Steve Shannon Tire chain.
Wait, there's more. President Steve Shannon says store No. 17 is being built in Sugarloaf, Pa. The outside of the building is up and the parking lot is paved; according to Shannon, the outlet will open April 1.
The first Steve Shannon Tire & Auto Center was opened in 1988. The stores, plus a 145,000-square-foot wholesale warehouse, sell Michelin, BFGoodrich, Goodyear, Firestone, Bridgestone, Delta, Hankook, Cooper and Uniroyal brand tires. The outlets also offer commercial tires and a full-range of automotive services, including engine and transmission work.
Steve is not the only Shannon in the business. His three sons, Herbie, Jesse and Steven, are very active, as is his wife, Kelly. Their daughter, Stephanie, plans to join the business after she finishes high school and college.
In addition to Stroudsburg, the chain has stores in the following Pennsylvania cities: Benton, Berwick, Bloomsburg, Dallas, Danville, Harrisburg, Lock Haven, Mifflinburg, Mountain Top, Muncy, South Williamsport, Towanda and West Nanticoke. Its Canton, Pa., store, No. 15, was formerly Landon Tire Co. Shannon purchased the store last June from John Lee Jr., son of co-founder John Lee. The elder Lee and the late Frank Landon opened the store in 1972.
Shannon says there is more growth to come. "We want to digest these (moves) for a few months, but we're looking down the road already. We're definitely going to be growing."
Shannon Tire is tied for 77th on the 2015 Modern Tire Dealer 100 list. When its 17th store is up and running, the company will be tied for 63rd on the list.
