Number one! Discount Tire tops Modern Tire Dealer 100

July 17, 2009

The numbers have been tallied, and Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Discount Tire Co. Inc. has taken the number one position on the 2009 Modern Tire Dealer 100, as seen in the July 2009 issue of MTD. This ranking marks Discount Tire's second consecutive year at the top of the Modern Tire Dealer 100.

With 744 stores as of May 1, 2009 -- this year's cut-off date for the Modern Tire Dealer 100 -- Discount Tire edged out Juno Beach, Fla.-based Tire Kingdom Inc., which had 733 locations as of that date.

Bend, Ore.-based Les Schwab Tire Centers took the third spot with 353 locations, while Rochester, N.Y.-based Monro Muffler Brake Inc. came in at number four with 154 stores. Bound Brook, N.J.-based Somerset Tire Service Inc. rounded out this year's "top five" with 115 outlets.

This year's Modern Tire Dealer 100 examines the 100 largest independent tire store chains in the United States. It breaks down store counts in three categories (retail only, commercial only and combination retail/commercial) and lists all tire brands that each dealership carries. It also lists other vital data, such as executives, Web sites and location of headquarters.

As a bonus this year, the Modern Tire Dealer 100 section contains exclusive, one-on-one interviews with executives from the list's "top five." It also contains in-depth analyses of who's moved up since last year and who's dropped down the list, plus an analysis of tire brands represented, including a list of the most popular brands.

Of the chains that appeared on last year's Modern Tire Dealer 100, 35 added locations over the last 12 months!
