Mavis Tire Express Services Corp.’s upcoming purchase of TBC Corp.’s Tire Kingdom and National Tire and Battery (NTB) stores will be the latest in a long string of acquisitions Mavis has made.
The Millwood, N.Y.-based company has been particularly active on the M&A front within the last eight years.
In August 2015, Mavis acquired Somerset Tire Service Inc., a Bridgewater, N.J.-based dealership that had 95 stores in New Jersey, 33 outlets in Pennsylvania and 29 locations in New York, plus six wholesale distribution centers that operated under the Banner Tire name.
At the time of the purchase, Somerset Tire ranked No. 6 on the MTD 100, while Mavis, with 324 stores, occupied the fifth spot on the MTD 100.
In January 2018, Mavis acquired 69 retail stores in Florida and Georgia from Kaufmann Tire Inc. This brought Mavis’ total store count to more than 400 outlets, including other Mavis-owned locations. At the time, Kaufmann Tire held the No. 17 spot on the MTD 100.
“We’ve admired Kauffman Tire for years," said David Sorbaro, co-CEO of Mavis., when the deal was announced. "It’s a strong operator with a great reputation and complimentary offerings in a new geography for Mavis."
Also during 2018, Mavis acquired Sun Tire and Automotive Services, an 11-store chain based in Jacksonville, Fla. Nine of those stores were located in the Jacksonville area, while two were located in Tallahassee, Fla.
Later in the year, Mavis acquired five Hill Tire Centers in South Carolina, plus six Dekalb Tire & Automotive Service locations in Georgia. These purchases moved Mavis into the No. 4 spot on the MTD 100.
By this time, Mavis had locations in 13 states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.
In early-2020, Mavis boosted its store count via its acquisition of 112 NTB stores from TBC, which made Mavis the second largest tire dealership in the U.S., according to MTD research.
The following year, Mavis itself was acquired when a group of investors led by BayPine LP - in partnership with TSG Consumer Partners LP and a holding company controlled by David and Stephen Sorbaro - entered into an agreement to buy the company for an undisclosed amount. The deal closed during the second quarter of 2021.
Golden Gate Capital retained a minority interest in Mavis, which by then had grown to encompass more than 1,000 locations. David and Stephen Sorbaro continued to serve as co-CEOs of the company, positions they hold today.
In December 2021, Mavis announced it was buying Tuffy Tire & Auto Service Centers, a 165-store business with both corporate-owned and franchise locations across the U.S.
Mavis kicked off 2022 by acquiring Orlando, Fla.-based Action Gator Tire Stores' retail outlets from Christensen Enterprises, which bolstered the company’s presence in “The Sunshine State.”
The 2021 edition of the MTD 100 listed Action Gator as having 19 retail/commercial locations, as well as five commercial tire outlets and one distribution center, making it the 48th largest independent tire dealership in the United States at the time.
During the first half of 2021, Mavis then acquired Moosic, Pa.-based Jack Williams Tire Co.’s retail and wholesale businesses. Jack Williams Tire had 39 retail stores at the time, plus 11 distribution centers that served more than 5,000 dealers across Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
The Jack Williams Tire deal gave Mavis 109 retail stores in Pennsylvania.
In July 2022, Mavis acquired Melvin's Tire Pros & Auto Service Centers, a five-store dealership based in North Kingston, R.I.
The recently announced NTB/Tire Kingdom acquisition, which is set to close soon, increases Mavis’ store count to more than 2,000 locations. Mavis is the largest tire store chain in the United States, according to MTD research.
