Tire dealership mergers and acquisitions continue unabated. And more commercial tire dealerships are getting in on the action.
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-based McCarthy Tire Service Co Inc., one of the five largest independent commercial tire dealerships in the United States, has picked up three more dealerships.
In February, McCarthy Tire extended its reach into Tennessee and the Carolinas by acquiring Piedmont Truck Tires Inc., which has 10 locations and two retread plants.
Dan Rice, Piedmont’s longtime president, will continue to oversee operations and the business will continue to operate under the Piedmont name.
In March, McCarthy Tire finalized its acquisition of LS Truck Tire Repair, a Philadelphia, Pa.-based commercial tire dealership with five locations, including one in New Jersey.
Leandro “Lee” Lamounier and Horacio Venture, LS Truck Tire’s owners, met one another while working at McCarthy Tire in the early 2000s and later formed their own business.
Earlier this month, McCarthy Tire bolstered its ag tire business by purchasing Classic Tire Service Inc., a single location dealership in Barclay, Md., from its owners, Milt and Dawn Karbaum.
In business for more than four decades. Classic Tire Service sold ag tires across Maryland’s eastern shore, a largely agricultural area.
Milt will continue to manage the location’s operations, according to John McCarthy Jr., McCarthy Tire’s president.
Further west, Green Bay, Wis.-based Pomp’s Tire Service Inc. - the fifth largest retreader in the United States, according to MTD research - acquired Dale’s Tire & Retreading Inc., which is based in Rapid City, S.D.
Founded in 1962, Dale’s Tire & Retreading has three locations - two in Rapid City and one in Scottsbluff, Neb.
The dealership has a consumer tire division, a commercial tire division and a wholesale distribution business. Like Pomp’s, it’s a Bandag retreader.
Prior to the acquisition of Dale’s Tire & Retreading, Pomp’s had 16 retread plants.
Potosi, Mo.-based Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. acquired Commerce City, Colo.-based OTR, commercial truck and industrial tire dealership Callendar Tire Inc. this past February.
And on the West Coast, East Bay Tire Co., which is headquartered in Fairfield, Calif., recently acquired San Rafael, Calif.-based Brandon Tire Supply, which also does business as Brandon Tire.
Brandon Tire opened in 1960 and eventually expanded into Sonoma and Napa Counties, as well as Solano and Contra Costa Counties - all in the northern California region.
“We will continue delivering on the same values and standard of service Brandon Tire customers have come to know,” says George Pehanick, CEO of East Bay Tire, which now has 14 locations, including nine in California, one in Arizona and outlets in Hawaii.
