Alabama's new Scrap Tire Environmental Quality Act will help remove some of the nation's largest scrap tire piles.
"This law will collect funds for pile abatement, tire recycling and also will penalize offenders," says John Falardeau, state legislative manager for the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), which had pushed for the legislation.
The law also contains language calling for scrap tire market development.
Overall, the United States produces more than 280 million scrap tires each year, according to RMA statistics.
