The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says Tireco Inc. has determined that 6,170 of its GEO-Trac passenger tires made between June 12, 2009, and Aug. 20, 2009, do not comply with certain federal safety standards.
Specifically, according to NHTSA, "markings on the non-compliant tires (listing) the maximum inflation pressure... are reversed from the order" mandated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139.
The tires were manufactured by Shandong Linglong Tyre Co. Ltd. and imported into the United States by Tireco.
"Tireco has stated that it has already retrieved almost half of the 6,170 non-compliant tires from its distributors and dealers, and estimated that there are only 3,370 non-compliant tires in the field."
NHTSA officials report that Tireco "has petitioned for an exemption from the notification and remedy requirements... on the basis that this non-compliance is inconsequential to motor vehicle safety."
